  Video Poker Strategies

While the odds on a hand vary between games, the house edge remains relatively low for Video Poker games. In many of the cases it might even reach 0 percent. The Video Poker games maintain their edge mostly from players who are unaware or don’t follow the best strategies. Thus, for those trying to play without a clear strategy the good chances are you will lose badly.

1. Jacks Or Better/Tens or Better Poker Strategy
the general strategy for the above games are as follows:

  • Hold four card Royal Flushes in order to make Straights or Flushes.
  • Hold four card straight flushes especially those that are inside or outside.
  • Hold High card Pairs rank here.
  • Hold Three card Royal Flushes.
  • Hold Four card Flushes.
  • Hold Low Pairs rank here, continue to attempt to construct Three Of A Kind.
  • Hold Four card Flushes.
  • Hold Four card Straights. Hold inside Straights but only if you have three or more high cards (J, Q, K, A).

For those hands that don’t necessarily hold something of value the best strategy is to:

Hold any two cards that are suited. Discard high cards that are unsuited.Hold Four mixed-suit high cards:
-keep any three suited, throw away the unsuited.
-otherwise, keep all of them.

  • Hold Three unsuited high cards:
    -keep all three of K-Q-J.
-when you have A-K-J or A-Q-J, throw away the A.
  • Hold any two unsuited high cards.
  • Hold any single high card.

Playing the Tens or better is identical strategy to playing the Jacks Or Better. Except, this time the ten is considered the high card.

Deuces Wild Video Poker Strategy
the following is the general strategy. In involves the best options first:

  • Five Of A Kind or Royal Flush should always be held.
  • If not hold the four twos.
  • If you only hold three two's:
-keep those that will give you five Of A Kind or Royal Flush
    - or, maintain the two's and dump the remainder.
  • if you have two twos:
-keep those that will secure a flush or Five Of A Kind.
    -spare four of a Kind.
-maintain four of a Royal Flush.
-if not, maintain the two's and throw the rest.

While many players will not throw away five cards, it still remains a very important strategy to playing. You need to give yourself the maximum space for extra card(s), this is the best chance to score a deuce(s). don’t hold onto the ace or king. It isn’t a good idea, especially since the next possible hand could be four or five sevens.

Those individuals who regularly play Jacks or Better generally will only get rid of a complete hand - 5 cards, very, very rarely. Alternatively, those players who are used to playing Deuces Wild are accustomed to throwing away hands and will do so almost 20 percent of the time. That’s nearly every fifth hand.

If you believe you have the best possible return from the five cards that were dealt to you in the beginning, you should make sure you hold inside straights.
