How to cheat, or catch a cheater, in poker

Poker stakes have been steadily increasing along with poker's popularity. Thousands of dollars are up for grabs from jackpots, tournaments, casinos and online websites. It is not surprising that the level and range of poker strategies, tricks and cheating have also been steadily climbing. Indeed, many are being adopted around the globe. The following information allows players to be aware of possible tricks and cheats competitors will employ to get ahead.

Collusion

Collusion takes place between at least two players – more may be involved. When these players form a cooperative strategy to help sway the outcome of a game they are awarded this title. Colluders work together and generally split the profits from the games.

Colluders will often utilize pre-determined signals to each other to let one another know the strength of their hand. It can also be to indicate how to carry through a betting scheme. Colluders are also known to use distractive antics to while one of them manipulates the deck for their benefit- this is especially common when one of the colluders is in the position of dealer.

Players will often flash their cards to reveal their hand. This is most common in a draw game. In such cases, a player can reveal his cards while retrieving them – quickly flashing a glimpse to his/ her partner.

Another tactic colluders employ is known as sandwiching. In such cases they attempt to intimidate a third player, forcing him to withdraw.

Such tricks generally take place between two players playing with a third. The two colluders raise the stakes against each other and thus raise the pot limit. Of course at the end, they will split the pot between themselves. When this happens, the third player only sees the pot limit rising – he is then forced to bet of fold.

A foreign language can also be used in this instance. A foreign language allows players to communicate to one another during a game. This is common in casinos.

Collusion is not a risky form of cheating. Nevertheless, most players either have difficulty recognizing it, or at least having enough evidence to prove its existence. Because of this, collusion has become a popular form of cheating – at the expensive of those players searching for an honest game.

Marked Cards

Players mark cards for use of identification. However, to mark the cards, the player has to have access to them prior to the game. In home tournaments, this is generally not a problem. In such cases, the marked cards often already belong to the person cheating.

There are several methods involved in marking cards in such a way that it is not obvious to other players. Such marking, which are often hard to identify and prove, involve making tiny, subtle changes to the cosmetic look of certain parts of the card.

A serious card marker would never make any mark too bold. Instead a mark would involve Small scratches, bends, or design changes. The best place to put them is on the underside of the card.

Card marking isn’t random. Card markers have serious strategies depending on the game they intend to play. Generally, high cards will be marked. However, for more specific games such as High Chicago, the high spades will be marked as well as the twos for Deuces Wild.

There are four common methods of marking cards: daubing, thumbnailing, shading and using the corner crimp.

Daubing

Using a special ink, the marker daubs the cards. This ink can then only be detected through a specially designed sunglasses. These are easily available and can be located at magic shops and game stores. The ink cannot be detected by the naked eye. For this reason, it can be used to amazing effects by poker players.

Thumbnailing uses, as is stated, the thumbnail of the marker to indent a card, through applying pressure. Often thumbnailing is used to identify the top card of the deck.

Shading also depends on a type of ink. This is also used to adjust the appearance of a card. In these cases, the ink may be visible to the general group. However, because the mark is so small and discreet it is difficult to notice it. Thus only someone looking for such a mark is likely to see it.

A corner crimp involves slightly bending the corner of a card. The cheat will identify the card simply because he/ she is aware of its existence. A far more serious style of crimping occurs when the cheat will purposely put all four aces at the bottom of the pile and crimp them in one go.

Fake Chips

In order to gain an advantage over other players, a cheat will introduce phony chips into the game. This is possible when players bring chips from their house and thus integrates them into the game. It can also occur when a player circulates the chips that all the players have access to. In some cases, the cheat will use stolen chips.

However, there are several ways to prevent phony chips from entering into poker games.

The first method is by maintaining a strict policy on cheating. It should be made clear that those players found interfering with the chip will be expelled from the game immediately.

The chips should also be securely maintained a place that can be locked and protected. Often when games against friends are taking place, players tend to be more relaxed about the protection of the chips. But it should be noted, even the most trustworthy player can be tempted. In larger tournaments and home games an assigned person should have the responsibility of maintaining and securing the chips.

Using unique chips is helpful. Using unique chips makes it more difficult for players to introduce foreign chips and fakes. Standard color chips should therefore be avoided. Even though casino may adopt standard colors for their regulations and convenience, for home games it is recommended to use as zany a chip as possible. This will make it far more difficult for players to introduce new chips from home into the game.

There was a recent example at a major competition, where fake chips were introduced. In the 2005 World Series of Poker, players introduced new chips from the souvenir store. This made it almost impossible to differentiate between the legitimate and fake $100 chips.

Angling

Angling refers to the occurrence or action of a player, when he/ she intentionally decides to act out of turn. This could be in the form of making a bet or a fold when it is another player's turn to respond. This is obviously designed to benefit the angler himself.

An example of folding may include an angler throwing his cards on the table, at another player's turn, this gives the impression that he is preparing to fold.

These type of actions are intended to fool other players into staying in the game. However, in reality, the angler has a strong hand and no intention to fold. When it eventually turns to the anglers real chance to play, he in fact chooses to remain in the game.

The opposite, but equally devious action, occurs when an angler pretends to make a bet – but again, out of turn. This is meant to deter other players from betting – often causing them to fold. Then, when the angler's turn comes around he chooses to withhold betting.

Some casinos permit angling. This has led to the development of the ‘angle shooter.’

The ‘angle shooter is a term given to those players who use this tactic far to frequently.

Often, the house will allow for players (anglers) to collect bets or retract bets if the have made these out of turn, as a form of strategy.

Misrepresenting a Poker Hand

Misrepresenting a Poker Hand is one of the more common poker tricks, that is equally hard to prove. In these cases, it occurs when a player lays down his hand at the final showdown.

When doing so, he misrepresents his hand by stating it as higher than it actually is. For instance, a player can lay an all straight red and call it as a straight flush. While this is easily spotted by players, when challenged, the person cheating can simply claim an innocent mistake. Nevertheless, players regularly forget to check winning hands.

Using a Prepared Deck of Cards

This is a more strategically intentional way of cheating. It can only be used at the start of the game, and can only be used on certain designs of cards where the picture on the back of the card is asymmetrical.

When the cheater prepares the pack of cards, he thus has the option of facing them all the same direction except for those cards he wants to recognize from their picture, he faces in the opposite direction. Thus the cheat can single out the desirable cards.

Prepared decks are used by all types of players and schemers – including anglers and colluders.

Interacting with the Pot

It is possible to create an advantage for yourself by meddling with the pot and the total amount of money found within it. The cheater generally has the best chance to change the amount of money in the pot, when he is betting or retrieving money from it. For instance, a player may be expected to place two dollars in the pot, instead he only places one dollar.

Sleight of hand is the term for several other complicated cheating strategies. This help to give the cheater an advantage over his competitors. These generally require more sophisticated, experienced poker players and cheats.

Palming: Sleight of Hand

Palming is the name for the strategy whereby the cheat hides the desirable card either by moving them into the hand, or into another part of the deck. The most basic form of palming is hiding the card in the palm of the hand. To do this the cheat grips the card between the heel of his hand and the last joints of his fingers.

Following this he can transfer the card to other areas of his clothes or body to be retrieved at a later stage in the game where it can be used for additional advantage. When he decides the time is ripe for the stolen card, he simply adds it to his hand and discards the less desirable card.

Palming is often called holding out. This term more succinctly describes the act of palming cards in between rounds.

Experienced palmers have no problem hiding these cards under objects on a table or on themselves. Sometimes, the only way to check if a person is cheating in this manner is to count the number of cards in the deck at the end of each round.

The Mechanic’s Grip: Sleight of Hand

The most skilled players and cheaters are adept at making movements and sleights of hands, thus manipulating the deck. One of these is known as the Mechanic's grip. The Mechanic's grip involves holding the entire pack of cards.

The dealer usually grips the cards, while dealing, in the palm of the hand, with the fingers on the one side and the thumb above the deck. The thumb is used to slide the cards, singly, onto the fingers. The index and thumb of the second hand catch the card and pass it to the players.

There is a scheme where the dealer can use the grip while dealing, to pass the cards from the long to the short side of the deck in a way that makes it possible to peak the cards.

In another example, the Mechanic's grip lets the dealer cover most the deck with his hand. This also allows for various moves making it possible to view the cards being dealt.

Shifting the Cut: Sleight of Hand

Cutting the deck generally involves the dealer first cutting the deck, then pushing the half towards a player, who then cuts that deck into two smaller piles. The cards that were on the bottom are then placed on the top. Those cards which were on the top and bottom are now placed in the center of the pile.

The purpose of cutting the deck is to prevent cheats from second dealing, peeking and bottom dealing. Nevertheless, cheats have discovered and mastered how to reverse the cut and thus return the cards and deck to its original order.

There are three steps to this process.

The first step: the first or top pile is to be place on the other pile. Generally, other players will not notice that this has taken place. The top pile is simply then place back on the top of the pile of cards. Consequently, the order of the cards remains intact as before the cut. Generally, some distraction is useful to ensure other players do not notice the cheat. Most cheats are very adept at this and can accomplish the trick with speed and efficiency.

Shifting the cut isn’t worth much unless there is another trick following.

Peeking at the Cards: Sleight of Hand

The Mechanic's grip allows the cheat to peak at the top card before he deals it. This is because the thumb blocks this card just before it is dealt. At the same time the pinky finger raises the long side of the card revealing the bottom right hand corner.

It is a tricky skill that can nonetheless be mastered quickly. By doing this, the player can know exactly what each player holds, or can even take the pertinent card by second dealing.

This trick is useful for many card games.

Dealing Extra Cards: Sleight of Hand

In a dealers roll, the cheat has all the access to the cards he needs. Thus he has the option of dealing himself extra cards. Instead of the thumb simply pushing one cards during the dealing, it can push two.

Dealing oneself extra cards towards the end of the game is especially tactical, as the extra cards can be hidden in the pile on the table.

Dealing extra cards, however, forcing the dealer to be discarding of other cards – since he is only allowed so many in a hand at any given time.

It is difficult and problematic to be hiding cards under the table or on the body since, they will be complicated to reintroduce back into the game later. Often, a low card found on the floor at the end of the game is the mark of a cheat.

Second Dealing: Sleight of Hand

Second dealing involves the act of dealing the second card from the top of the pile rather than the proper first card.

Generally, the dealer needs to peak at the cards before undertaking this trick.

In this way, the dealer will know if the first card is desirable and would rather keep it for him / her – self rather than dealing it to some other player. In this way the dealer ensures the top card remains his.

Second dealing requires the Mechanic's grip. Using the thumb to push the top card away, thus the second card remains for dealing.

False Shuffling: Sleight of Hand

There are four known methods of false shuffling. These are the most commonly employed for poker.

The first method includes keeping the bottom card at the bottom of the deck. This is a particularly useful method for cheats who will be using the bottom dealing tactic. Before beginning the shuffling process, the cheat will check the bottom card. If it is desirable he will shuffle the cards in a way that will keep the bottom card for himself.

Another method of this kind of cheating includes switching the bottom card to the top of the deck.

After the cheat has seen the card on the bottom, he uses an undercut shuffle to bring it to the top. The careful motion of this movement ensures that only the bottom card is brought to the top. This is a particularly useful technique to be followed by second dealing or dealing extra cards during the game.

The third method from this kind of cheating from the false shuffling methods, is to manipulate the individual card's positions inside the deck. This takes place during the shuffling process.

This demands much skill and practice, especially to make the move without being detected by the other players.

However, those cheats with more experience wont have a problem shuffling the deck to produce their acquired hand.

These deck stackers arrange the pile so that the kings are all on the top. The cheater then separates the kings by a set number of cards in the shuffle. Thus, he can be confident that all four kings will be included in the cheaters own hand.

False shuffling is extremely hard to detect. The only way it can be prevented is by ensuring a cutting takes place after the deck has been shuffled.

Bottom Dealing: Sleight of Hand

Bottom dealing takes place when the cheat decides he wants to save the bottom most card for himself. In order to do so, he deals the players as regular, however, when it comes to dealing for himself, the cheater takes the card from the bottom of the pile, thus ensuring he has the card. The Mechanic's grip is the best for accomplishing this.

Generally, players wont notice that a cheat has organized the bottom card for himself. The single way to detect if a cheat has attempted to swipe the bottom card is if the penultimate card accidentally comes out along with it. This card is known as the hanger.

Once all the tricks and cheats are familiar, the next useful step is to find methods to protect oneself while playing.

Marked Card Protocol

The best deterrent against marked cards is regularly checking for signs of such tampering. Some are difficult and even impossible to detect with the naked eye. Other times, the job is amateur and can be easily detected. Crimping and shading is much more obvious. Cards should be checked often for these. A general rule of thumb is to keep aware as well as a close eye on all the cards on the table at all times.

In the dealers position it is easy to check for marked cards. This can be quickly done by skimming through the pack. Crimping can be spotted in a similar way to thumbing through a pile of photographs – cards should be checked in this manner for all four corners.

Studying the backs of cards during a game is also useful. This is a discouraging tactic.

Separate the Anglers

Separating suspect anglers helps to put a stop to angling attempts. Anglers generally need each other to work together in order to accomplish the trick. The best is to put them at completely different tables to play.

Limit your Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol consumption is hazardous for serious gambling. it totally impairs you ability to judge as well as to catch a cheat. Alcohol, on the other hand, can make a cheat act sloppily – in this way he will be easy to catch.

 Playing with Strangers

Playing with strangers raises the risk of playing with a cheat. Some people refuse to play poker with people they don’t know. However, this isn’t a fool proof method. What about friends of friends?

Though people feel more comfortable playing with familiar player denying access to strangers obviously limits the circle a player can access. Furthermore, it doesn’t prevent friends from cheating.

Verifying Each Players’ Hand

Poker players are responsible for their own honesty as well as the honesty of others. Thus it is critical that players watch deposits and withdraws from the pot as well as other players' hands. Players can even demand that each participant reveal their hand as well as the verbal step by step pot interaction.

Swapping Decks

Changing the deck of cards after every few games will help avoid playing and playing again with a deck that is marked. An excuse of wearing down the cards is good in order to subtly avoid making a big scene about cheating.

Using a Shoe for Dealing

Generally a plastic box, a shoe stores cards and dispenses them one at a time. the shoe can be passed around the table. thus each person still get the opportunity to act as dealer. The shoe prevents cards from being tampered with. However, the shoe is not so useful in home games and can breed an air of mistrust.
