The following are some terms that will help you get started on your poker voyage. Note, these are just some of the terms used for poker. The list is in no way comprehensive nor complete.

Big Blind: this is the bet made by the player sitting twice across to the left of the dealer. This is a forced bet.
Button: a button is a small plastic disk used to mark who the dealer is during a particular round this is also sometimes referred to as the dealer button
Draw: this is the reference to those cards you are hoping to get to complete your hand.
Flop: the flop refers to the first three cards dealt by the dealer. They are placed face up.
Outs: this is the reference to those cards remaining on the deck which will help you. They give you an additional advantage over your rivals.
Position: this is the reference to each players seating location in regards to the dealer. Cards and betting take place in a clockwise direction. They start with the player immediately left to the dealer.
Pot Odds: most new players are unfamiliar of confused by this term. This is unfortunate, as they are at a major disadvantage. It is the term between the amount of money already in the pot and the amount the player needs to put in the pot in order to continue. |
