How to Play Baccarat

A game of baccarat begins after the dealers or croupiers place eight packs of shuffled cards into a plastic box known as the shoe. The players in the game then take turns at placing bets on the Banker’s hand or the Player’s hand.

Baccarat Basics

Following the initial bets, each hand is now dealt two cards. The Player’s hand is given two cards first followed by a second two cards for the Banker’s hand. Both the Player and the Banker has the option of taking a third card if he or she wishes.

After the final round of cards has been dealt by the Banker, it’s time to determine the winner. The winner of the baccarat hand is the hand that holds cards with the total of points being nearest to nine. The value of zero is attributed to a ten. Cards with a sum of ten as well as picture cards are also valued as ten. Cards with a face value of 1 to 9 retain their face values. Ace is counted as one. The last digit is used when cards have more than one.

An example of this is demonstrated below. Two cards valued at 5 and 7 are 12. However, in baccarat only the last digit, being 2, is taken into account.

Banker and Player bets are paid out at even money. Five percent commission is awarded to the Banker when he wins bets, ensuring he retains a small advantage on the way in which cards are drawn. A tied hand is paid out at a rate of 8 to 1.

 When to Draw Third Cards

It is crucial to understand the circumstances in which a Player or Banker must draw a third card.

Player Examples:
  • A player can draw a third card if he has a total of five or less.
  • Player actions determine whether the Banker must draw a third card.
Banker Examples:
  • If a Player draws a third card, the Banker must draw a third card if he has a total of three, providing that the Player’s card is not an eight.
  • If a Player draws a third card, the Banker must draw a third card if he has a total of four, providing that the player’s card is not an eight, nine, zero or one.
  • If a Player draws a third card, the Banker must draw a third card if he has a total of five, providing that the Player’s card is four, five, six or seven.
  • If a Player draws a third card, the Banker must draw a third card if he has a total of six, providing that the Player’s card is six or seven.
  • The Banker must draw a third card regardless of the Player’s actions if he has a total of two or less.
  • The Banker must stand if has a total of seven.
  • If either the Banker or the Player has a total of eight or nine of their first two cards, neither can draw a third card. The hand is called a “natural” signifying the end of the game.

While these rules may seem confusing to read, most baccarat players pick them up very easily during the course of the game.

How to Place Wagers in Baccarat

Placing bets in a game of baccarat is relatively simple. You can either choose to bet on the Banker’s Hand, the Player’s Hand, or on a Tie. While bets can exceed any amount, they must conform to the table minimum

Placing Bets on the Banker’s Hand

To physically place a bet on the Banker’s hand, you must place your chips in the Banker’s area facing you on the baccarat table. If the Banker’s hand has a higher value than the Player’s hand, you have won the bet. The five percent commission comes out of your winnings and you receive a payout in even money.

Instead of collecting the commission straight away, the dealer keeps a note of the players’ commission debts and pays out even money to bets won by the banker. This is done to prevent the game from losing its momentum. The dealer then asks for the total commission from all players after having finished the cards in the shoe, or from individual players if they decide to leave the game early.

Placing bets on the Banker’s hand gives the casino a house edge of 1.01 percent.

Placing Bets on the Player’s Hand

To physically place a bet on the Player’s hand, you must place your chips in the Player’s area facing you on the baccarat table. If the Player’s hand has a higher value than the Banker’s hand, you have won the bet. There is no commission charge on this bet and you receive a payout of even money.

Placing bets on the Player’s hand gives the casino a house edge of 1.29 percent.

Placing bets on a Tie

To physically place a bet on a Tie occurring, you must place your chips in the tie area or on the number corresponding with your seat number on the baccarat table. If a Tie between the Player’s and Banker’s hand ensues, you have won the bet. There is no commission charge on this bet and you receive a payout of eight to one.

If you place your bet on either the Banker or the Player and a Tie ensues, your bet is returned to you. You can however leave your bets on the table, while choosing to add to them or decrease them for the next round.

Placing bets on a Tie gives the casino a house edge of 15.75 percent and is the worst bet you can make in baccarat.

House Advantages and How They Work

While baccarat may appear to offer the player generous odds, one should remember that the casino factors in a profit to all wagers. Each bet ultimately forecasts a negative prediction for the player. American baccarat rules generally follow the formula below:

  • Wagers on the Player’s hand gives the casino an advantage of 1.29 percent
  • Wagers on the Banker’s hand gives the casino an advantage of 1.01 percent
  • Wagers on a Tie gives the casino an advantage of 15.75 percent

This means that when you wager on the Player’s hand, you lose 1.29 dollars in every hundred.

So how does one win at baccarat?
Having a Baccarat System

Successful baccarat players still manage to win despite the house’s advantage by exercising a baccarat system. A system, or strategy, can be formulated based on the results of all previous rounds played and the previous wagers that have been made on baccarat hands.

While no tried and true method exists to help baccarat players cheat the odds, it is almost impossible to forecast which hand will win in a round. Mathematically speaking, no one can influence the odds. For this reason, card counting in baccarat – while fun – cannot truly enhance your skill.

One system that baccarat fans favor is known as the 1-3-2-6 system. This method of play focuses on monitoring bets and aims to reduce the dollar amount of your bets while still helping you to achieve the largest possible wins.

Adherents of the 1-3-2-6 system base their game play on the following:

1)       Place a one unit bet to commence the game. If you win your bet in the first round, increase the amount to a three unit bet for the second round.

2)       If you win the second bet, you have six units available to you. Retrieve four units and place the remaining two as your third bet.

3)       If you win this third bet, add an extra two units and use a total of six units on your fourth bet.

4)       If you win this fourth bet, you have profited by ten units from a total sum of twelve.

This means that to use this system of baccarat, you must sacrifice one unit if you lose your first bet. You lose two units if you win your first bet but lose the second wager. If your second wager is successful, you profit two units. If you win three bets but lose the fourth, you’ll have broken even. You can also break even if you lose the second bet five out of six rounds but come back with four successful consecutive bets in the game.

This system works for baccarat due to the game’s even money payout system. However, the casino will always win in the long term.
